Medical Acupuncture
Medical acupuncture, often known as dry needling, is a Western technique that utilises fine needles to target specific muscle trigger points. This method aims to reduce pain, increase circulation, decrease tension, and promote tissue healing. Application of acupuncture needles usually cause very little discomfort. You may feel a small twitch or dull ache if a trigger point is stimulated.
Healthcare professionals, such as osteopaths, commonly use this technique to address musculoskeletal concerns, including back pain, headaches, arthritic knees and sports injuries. This approach differs from Traditional Chinese Medicine acupuncture, which works along energy meridians.
Medical acupuncture is often combined with and complements other osteopathic treatment techniques to provide most relief to the patient.
How it works:
Trigger point release- The needle is precisely inserted into a ‘knot’ to relax the muscle, reduce tension and improve mobility.
Nervous system stimulation- It stimulates sensory nerves, prompting the body to release natural pain-relieving substances, such as endorphins.
Healing and repair- The small lesion caused by the needle triggers tissue repair and remodelling.
Increase circulation- Dry needling increases blood flow so more nutrients can be supplied to the area, accelerating the healing response.
Reduce inflammation-Increased circulation brings immune cells to the area, helping to reduce inflammation.
